Job Description

Spire is seeking an Operational Accounting Lead to work in the 700 Market, St. Louis, Missouri office. This position will focus on coordinating many activities within the Operational Accounting department to ensure accurate and timely reporting of key components of the Company’s financial statements, completing management reporting variance explanations, and providing key work papers to support the external financial reporting team. This role also collaborates often with other functional areas, including but not limited to Operations Controller, Organic Growth, Customer Experience, and Regulatory. In addition, this lead position is responsible for guiding, motivating, and evaluating employees to ensure they are performing to the best of their abilities.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist the Manager Operations Accounting in supporting the monthly closing process as it pertains to the functional team, including but not limited to, revenue, gas cost, fixed assets, derivatives, and work order management.

  • Manage the recording, review and documentation of all journal entries prepared and recorded by direct reports.

  • Review account analyses and supporting work papers prepared by direct reports for accuracy and compliance with accounting policies.

  • Assist in the completion of the operating revenue and gas cost budget, as well as monthly forecasts throughout the fiscal year.

  • Coordinate and gather budget and forecast assumptions for all applicable areas to increase accuracy.

  • Provide analytical review to confirm accuracy of reported net operating margin results for each utility and drivers for variances from budget, prior year, and forecast.

  • Train and assist direct reports in accounting procedures and problem solving, as well as identifying and implementing process improvement opportunities.

  • Support the Manager Operations Accounting to ensure financial reporting and accounting controls and related documentation are in place and tested in compliance with SOX 404 requirements, including IPE documentation.

  • Coordinate and oversee the completion of critical regulatory work papers in support of PGA, ACA, ISRS, and General rate case filings.

  • Manage the preparation and review of deliverables supporting external filings to various regulatory bodies as requested by the External Reporting department.

  • Perform other quarterly/annual projects as needed

  • Work in coordination with other areas (Operations Controller, Organic Growth, Customer Experience, Regulatory, Tax, among others) to ensure transparent communication and seamless information transfer between impacted parties.

  • Assist internal and external auditors in completing audits relating to various filings.

  • Assist in the departmental leadership of talent review and succession planning activities to identify gaps and critical roles.

  • Complete various report requests from executive management or others within the organization to support the business needs of the Company.

Required Skills

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or similar degree.

  • Graduate degree (MBA) is preferred.

Required knowledge, skill and abilities

  • 5-8 years’ relevant experience.

  • Experience in a regulated environment, strongly preferred.

  • Strong, detailed knowledge of US GAAP.

  • Knowledge of FERC accounting requirements, preferred.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Requires supervision of 3 – 5 direct reports.
