This position is located in the Financial Management Service at the Colmery-O'Neil VA Medical Center, Topeka, KS. Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Perform a variety of duties in a field station in connection with the maintenance of accounts in the accounting section;
- Serve as alternate agent cashier and alternate transportation assistant;
- Receive purchase orders, travel orders and similar documents for obligation against appropriated funds;
- Review documents to ensure they are authorized in accordance with regulations, charged to the applicable appropriation, and funds are available to cover the obligation;
- Obligate documents assigning appropriate symbolic codes for general ledger accounts, obligation account, control point and cost center, limitation and appropriation;
- Maintain liquidated obligation back-up service documents;
- Provide reimbursement follow-up, reconciliation, and application of payments for several military revenue generation programs;
- Prepare monthly reconciliation and adjustment of accounts;
- Analyze and validate automated reports for accuracy;
- Provide data for reports to Austin DPC and VACO and various local reports for operating officials and management;
- Process field service receipt documents and various EOM journal vouchers including salary accruals.

Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Examples include knowledge of accounts payable, accounts receivable, patient accounts, non-VA payments, accounting or reconciliation, first or third party collections.
As a general rule, education is not creditable above GS-5 for most positions covered by this standard; however, graduate education may be credited in those few instances where the graduate education is directly related to the work of the position. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required graduate education you have earned (courses directly related to the work of an Accounting Technician). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-06.

Physical Requirements:Most of the work is done while sitting. Work involves some walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching and some lifting (5-10 lbs) and carrying light items, such as papers, books, etc.
Time-in-grade: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05 level.
