Summary/General Description Of Job:
Under general direction of the Finance Manager, the staff accountant is responsible for assisting the Finance Manager with the operation of the Finance Department to include the Accounts Payable, Payroll, Billing and Accounts Receivable, General Ledger and other accounting functions. The incumbent should have a thorough understanding of the contract awarded and demonstrate technical expertise in the job functions of Finance department staff.
Essential Duties & Job Functions:
Assist in the preparation of month end close, and government, Center and Corporate financial reports. Review reports for accuracy and resolve.
Review payroll input for errors and verify the payroll system reports for accuracy.
Prepare monthly journal entries for posting in general ledger. Reviews journal entries prepared by accounting clerks.
Prepare monthly invoices.
Review payroll transfers and check requests.
Maintain cash disbursements journal, general ledger and cost ledger by recording accounting transactions, preparing reconciliations and financial tabulations as assigned.
Reconcile assigned balance sheet accounts.
Review accounts payable batches for accuracy. Update these batches on a daily basis for the weekly check run.
Review vacation and personal leave database inquiry and reporting system; runs and distributes periodic reports for managers and supervisors.
Review check requests and funds transfers.
Provide technical payroll advice and guidance to Center managers, supervisors, and employees.
Maintain familiarity with the FAR, and Contract as well as keeping up to date with changes to each.
Review job cost reports monthly and ensure proper classification of expenses per the Job Corps PRH and contract proposal.
Assist students and answer questions regarding student pay.
Coordinate with other staff regarding other accounting matters.
Cultivate and maintain a climate on Center, which is free of harassment, intimidation, and disrespect to provide a safe place for staff and students to work and learn.
Responsible for monitoring student progress in the program by ensuring compliance with established corporate and DOL Data Integrity guidelines.
Promote student attainment of career success standards through modeling appropriate skills, mentoring students, monitoring, skills acquisition and intervening when inappropriate behavior is observed.
Performs related work as assigned.
Demonstrated knowledge of automated accounting systems or programs.
Strong critical thinking and analytical skills to interpret and manage data from finance.
Effective oral and written communication skills to support providing direction to staff and interaction with other departments.
Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and handle stressful situations.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Business Administration or Accounting with two (2) years related work experience.
o Six (6) years of relevant progressively responsible accounting experience can be substituted for the Bachelor’s degree.
Extensive knowledge of accounting processes to include payroll, accounts payable, general ledger, and job cost accounting.
Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel at an intermediate level.
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
Prior experience with government contracts and the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR).
Experience with Alaska Native Corporations.
